Why migrate from Umbraco 8?

  • 01

    Security

Without ongoing security updates, your platform becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats. Hackers actively exploit outdated software, and without patches, your system is at a higher risk of data breaches and attacks. Migrating ensures your platform remains secure and resilient

  • 02

    Compliance

Industries like fintech and eCommerce must adhere to strict regulatory standards. Without official support and updates, your platform may fail to meet compliance requirements, exposing your business to legal risks, penalties, and reputational damage. Upgrading helps you maintain compliance and avoid costly consequences

    Operational stability

End-of-life (EOL) software gradually becomes unstable and incompatible with modern systems, third-party integrations, and emerging technologies. Over time, performance issues, frequent crashes, and growing maintenance costs can disrupt operations. A proactive migration minimizes downtime, prevents costly workarounds, and keeps your business running smoothly

    Lack of support

With Umbraco 8 no longer supported, resolving technical issues becomes challenging and expensive. Without official patches or community updates, bug fixes and security patches require additional resources, leading to delays and higher costs. Moving to a supported version ensures access to timely fixes, expert assistance, and a more sustainable long-term solution

Planning your upgrade

You can’t upgrade directly from Umbraco 8 to Umbraco 13 or newer versions due to the necessity of transitioning from .NET Framework to .NET Core. But we have a guideline!
Custom Umbraco Development Tab
  • 01
    Step 1

    Upgrade to Umbraco 10

The update to version 10 is a mandatory step, as it introduces critical changes that enable further upgrades without data loss or functionality issues. Ensure all dependencies and packages are compatible with Umbraco 10 before proceeding. We recommend implementing a content freeze during the migration, as the data structure will also undergo changes

  • 02
    Step 2

Upgrade from Umbraco 10 to the Target Version (e.g., 13)

Once your project is on version 10, upgrading to 13 becomes more straightforward. Follow the official Umbraco upgrade documentation to ensure a smooth transition

  • 03
    Step 3

    Address custom and legacy editors

If your project includes custom or deprecated editors, they may cause migration challenges. For example, if you use Doc Type Grid Editor, its outdated architecture can lead to issues. Use the uSync Migrations plugin to handle custom and deprecated editors, ensuring content is migrated properly

  • 04
    Step 4

    Test compatibility

After each upgrade step, thoroughly test your website’s functionality. Check for broken content, missing dependencies, and compatibility issues. Run a staging environment before deploying to production. Gradual upgrades allow for thorough testing and tweaking, ensuring the CMS remains stable and functional after each transition

FAQ

  • End of Life (EOL) marks the phase when software is no longer updated and officially supported. While you can continue using it without immediate limitations, several risks arise over time:

    1. Compatibility issues. Without updates, your platform may face technical issues with hardware and third-party integrations, leading to disruptions in the long run.

    2. Security and compliance risks. As vulnerabilities emerge, maintaining security becomes more challenging. Businesses handling sensitive data may also face compliance restrictions, as many industries prohibit non-compliant software.

    3. Higher maintenance costs. Without vendor support, bug fixes and integration updates require additional resources, making them more expensive and time-consuming.

If you choose to keep using an EOL platform, be prepared to invest in risk mitigation and increased maintenance costs. However, if it still aligns with your business goals, strategic planning and expert support can help extend its usability.

  • Yes, it's generally possible, but implementing new features on legacy platforms often requires more time and effort than on modern versions. Without regular updates, compatibility with third-party modules may become an issue, meaning what works today might not work tomorrow.

  • You have several options. First, it's Umbraco 13 which is a long-time support or LTS version with EOL planned on December 14, 2026. It started on December 14, 2023, so it's not really fresh but it could be a good install-and-forget choice.

Then, you can opt for current standard-time support (STS) versions that have a year-long lifespan. It suits businesses willing to operate only cutting-edge software with ultimate performance. You can find the list here and pick up the most suitable one.

As well, you can wait until the release of LTS Umbraco 17 on November 27, 2025, which will stay fresh until November 27, 2028. It is the most effective long-term investment, especially if hosted in Umbraco Cloud which adds several more years of lifetime in addition to seamless performance and outstanding flexibility.

  • We offer two major options: WordPress and Optimizely. These two platforms cover almost all the needs of those who want to transition from Umbraco.

WordPress is a solution that is even lighter than Umbraco. It perfectly suits businesses that require only a simple website with several pages filled with text and some static media. You can easily operate it yourself and even create pages in the block editor, but WordPress is limited. This platform suits only the most basic needs, even after installing multiple plugins and add-ons, so think twice before opting for it.

On the other hand, Optimizely provides real enterprise opportunities. So, when your business is limited by Umbraco’s functionality, you should acknowledge it. With Optimizely, it's easy to implement sophisticated content management and marketing strategies, leverage cloud capabilities, and operate multiple websites from a single admin dashboard.

  • The difference between Umbraco versions mainly lies in the .NET framework they use. A newer .NET framework offers better security, improved performance, greater stability, and enhanced capabilities for implementing advanced features. Additionally, each Umbraco version introduces new features and updates. For example, Umbraco 15 includes the new Tiptap Rich Text Editor and optimized caching for content-rich platforms.

  • Yes, we can! Migrating from Umbraco 7 to modern platforms like Umbraco 13 is entirely possible. Thanks to our expertise, we ensure a seamless and secure transition. With UKAD, you can unlock cutting-edge opportunities without long-term disrupting your day-to-day operations.

Since the Umbraco 7 database schema differs from newer versions, the migration process begins with a content backup to safeguard your data. Next, you'll need to upgrade to at least Umbraco 7.15.10 to use the uSync plugin, which streamlines and secures the migration process. Once you've transitioned to a version built on the modern .NET Core framework, the upgrade follows the same steps outlined for Umbraco 8 migrations.
