AI-assisted development is quite similar to pair programming, where one role – the driver – writes code and another – the navigator – is responsible for reviewing code, solution design, and architectural consistency. In this case, AI acts as the driver, navigated by a human engineer. It writes code based on the delivery stage and current goals, and solves other well-defined tasks. The developer’s role is to make decisions, review commits, and ensure architectural consistency.
Depending on the project’s stage, AI involvement may vary from intensive involvement to routine assistance, but it never takes control of development or removes responsibility for the results from the engineer.
